Art on the Ave “Spread Love, It’s the Brooklyn Way”
You can watch this mini-review on Instagram.
I never feel more alive than when I’m hustling down a NYC sidewalk, headphones in, juking the slowpokes – but sometimes in my rush I miss some truly beautiful things. Art On the Ave was the reminder I needed! I hopped on the train from Harlem to Bed-Stuy to join a musical art walk for Spread Love: It’s the Brooklyn Way which featured art in 5 different locations around the Bed-Stuy Business Improvement District. After the pandemic, it’s been a little depressing to see so many shuttered storefronts around the city – so it’s nice to see these windows that would otherwise be behind metal gates transform into public gallery space. Jomani Danielle, the curator of the Spread Love exhibition and of whom I am a fan, selected works that highlight how Brooklynites show up for their neighbors on a day to day basis, making sure that everyone feels like they’re a part of the community and the culture. At the 3rd stop on the Art Walk, we were serenaded by horn player Ryan Easter, out front of 502 Nostrand where we could see a paint and collage piece by Alejandra Mandelblum called “Landing” and a photograph by Amanda Addison entitled “A Brooklyn Proposal.” Art on the Ave is all over the city at any given moment, so follow them to find the spark for your next sidewalk adventure. I know I’ll be checking out the installation in West Harlem happening now through November. Where would you like to see Art on the Ave go next?
“Spread Love, It’s the Brooklyn Way” was curated by Jomani Danielle and produced by Art on the Ave.
