“Auriea Harvey: My veins are the wires, my body is your keyboard”
If I had a dollar for every time someone at “Unanswered Questions” told me I *had to* see Auriea’s show at the MOMI, I could’ve bought a general admission ticket. Luckily, Thursdays are free. It’s clear that 1) I’m the last to know that Auriea Harvey is an actual digital genius and 2) that everyone at bitforms was right about the show. While I was playing minesweeper on Windows 98, Auriea was expanding the possibilities of what digital art can be. And she hasn’t stopped – this survey tracks her work back from the present to the beginning (as much as there ever is a exact start to something) and even her earliest work is futuristic. My brother could never quite convince me to play Smash Bros or Crash Bandicoot, but I’m sure I would’ve gotten lost in “The Path” or the “Endless Forest.” The VR/AR features had me whooshing sculptures around like Professor Xavier. Here I am, in awe of Auriea again, and wishing someone had told me earlier. My worries about the future of art have shifted. I fear it will be beautiful.
“Auriea Harvey: My veins are the wires, my body is your keyboard” is on view at the Museum of the Moving Image until July 7, 2024. The museum is open Thurs-Sun. The exhibit is rich, make a day of it.
