On the Saturday of Valentine’s weekend, I was invited to interview the headlining act of the February addition to the Billie Holiday Theatre’s “Billie and Beyond” concert series. I met with Lydia Caesar in her dressing room before the show to discuss the influence and legacy of Billie Holliday, Lydia’s secrets for songwriting and finding success as an independent artist, and the backstory of the songs she’d sing in her performance. 

Ms. Caesar’s concert far exceeded any and all of the expectations I’d had for the show. She’s a true powerhouse vocalist with an enviable range, and a stage presence that keeps you hanging on her every word during the anecdotes she uses to introduce each tune. She treated us to two on-stage looks – one was inspired by the jazz era (Billie’s heyday) and the other was an expression of Lydia’s ebullient personality. I’d take advantage of any opportunity to see Ms. Caesar perform again and her original song “St. Louis” has me thinking about taking a trip just to hear her sing it again live.
