Carl Broady “Jazz in Harlem”
The National Jazz Museum in Harlem asked Carl Broady, a photographer and the museum’s artist-in-residence, for shots that captured the true essence of the neighborhood and Mr. Broady more than delivered. His collection is made up of in-the-moment shots of jazz bands at block parties, stoop sessions (IYKYK), and parades. If you were in Harlem this summer or last and spent any time in the streets, there’s a good chance that you’re vibing in the background of one of Carl’s images. Terms like ‘gritty’ are overused to describe ‘urban’ photography, but Broady’s unrefined textures and tuned-up colors feel like a late summer stroll down Seventh Avenue.
The National Jazz Museum in Harlem is open to the public every Thu-Sat, 12-5pm. The art is available for purchase.
