March 2025 Recap
If February was a whirlwind, March was a full-on hurricane of theatre and first-time experiences. Despite all the contenders, this month’s standouts are a no-brainer. Wine in the Wilderness is the play I can’t stop talking about, thinking about, or recommending. I just can’t wrap my head around how the playwright Alice Childress could write a play in 1969 that would fit so perfectly into conversations about Black love and respectability in 2025. Over on YouTube, we’ve debuted our first ever studio visit with the incomparable visual artist Will Watson. The color on Will’s canvases is beyond energetic, and you won’t be able to look away as he unpacks the layers of joy, expression, and personal inspiration in his works.
There was also a heathy dose of openings and special events, like the reception for Jarrett Key’s excellent ‘Above and Beyond’ and my first-ever experience at a PhotoSLAM (imagine a poetry slam, but with semi-pro photography instead of poems!) At the end of the month, I saw Purpose, the latest Broadway show by Branden-Jacobs Jenkins. If you’ve already shared your email with me, keep an eye on your inbox — the Purpose review will be delivered directly to you as soon as it’s up. If you’re not on the mailing list, what are you waiting for?!
