Jeff Bezos, king of cardboard and packing tape build-up, has already told us that he is going to space and leaving the rest of us behind on Earth. Me, myself, I enjoy breathing, drinking water, and supporting the people who are fighting to keep our current planet nice and inhabitable. It’s good to know that I’m not alone in my desire.
Last night, I went to my first ever pop-up museum (I didn’t even know this was a thing!) The Climate Museum hosted a reception to promote a temporary show in SoHo called “End Fossil Fuels”. The panel featured 2 Black Stars: Vann Newkirk, a senior editor at the Atlantic, and R. Gregory Christie, a children’s book illustrator. If you are a teacher I guarantee you’ve seen Christie’s work – I definitely fan-girled a little when I got to meet him! Greg created an outstanding mural for the museum called “Making Tomorrow” and the transition from black and white to color represents our transition from exploitation to a climate-just future. Greg said he didn’t “want to paint a future that was idealistic, he wanted to paint a future that was ideal.” With his use of energetic colors and his signature take on cubism, the mural pushes us to dream of a brighter future for generations to come. We can’t solve our problems by running to space – later is too late to save what we love. Sucking on soggy paper straws and recycling is not nearly as impactful as collective action. Visit the Museum’s pop up to see Greg’s artistic contribution to the cause and learn how you can join in the fight against the climate crisis.
