Richard Hunt’s “Early Masterworks”

Moments from White Cube’s exhibition preview of “Early Masterworks” consisting entirely of pieces by the sculptor, Richard Hunt. There are two ideas swirling for me:

First, all you create now will become the foundation for what you’ll master in the future.

Second, all art (even abstract) (even metalwork) is political. See: Hero’s Head.

In 1956, Black sculptor Richard Hunt created a bust entitled “Hero’s Head” crafted entirely from welded and stainless steel. It was Hunt’s artistic response to the gruesome murder of a 14 year old boy in Mississippi. Hunt attended the open casket funeral and this sculpture is the face of the boy who was laid to rest. That boy’s name was Emmett Till. Hunt’s ability to create curves and details in a medium as stubborn as metal is an invitation to be both determined and patient. The gallery is open to the public.

You’ve exactly one month to see it for yourself.
