Affordable Art Fair Fall 2023

The fall presentation of the Affordable Art Fair inside the Metropolitan Pavilion on 18th Street is a welcome interruption to intentionally trippy immersive experiences and summertime lay-outs in the park. It’s time to put on a boot and accept that fall is here.

The quiz taking up a wall of the entry way assists you in deciding your artistic tastes: do you like texture, pop art, minimalism, or pieces that are “timeless”? While the exhibitors are not organized by these categories, you’ll begin to determine your tastes fairly quickly. The overwhelming amount of pop art featuring Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and somehow Scrooge McDuck (?) will either be endearing or predictable. If you look past the lacquered neon wall plates, the understated watercolors in shades of beige likely to find a home in an Airbnb or Hamptons house, and art designed specifically for people who want (but cannot afford) Banksy, you might find something that calls to you.

Highlights include black and white NYC photos from the 80s to now by Alfred Gonzalez (Gallery 71), textured paintings of people from above by JJ Marino (Able Fine Art), and feathers comprising faces inside of acrylic boxes by Marie Ange Daudé (Quantum Contemporary Art). Because both art and it’s affordability are subjective, the organizers might need reminding that many attend the fair for the experience and not to shop for a wall-filler. (The sheer number of selfies taken could indicate that certain well-heeled guests see themselves as the focal point in the room.) Inflatables from Mookntaka (Arts Gowanus) near the back of the top floor pass the vibe check and music or drinks would be welcome. In its 21st year, the fair is old enough to drink, but the options at the bar – white, red, Prosecco, and beer – are at no risk of outshining or enhancing the art (and only allowed on the top floor.) Stop by Cafeteria afterward for piping hot truffle mac and cheese, music spun live, and cocktails that are both balanced and beautiful – it turns out there’s a masterpiece within reach for all.
