“Table 17” Serves Up New Genre: The Black Millennial ‘Traum-Com’

This video essay is a review of “Table 17” written by Douglas Lyons and directed by Zhailon Levingston. MCC Theater’s production of “Table 17” ran in fall 2024.

Ring, ring, it’s your ex and they want to take you to dinner! You going? In this world premiere play by Douglas Lyons, characters Dallas and Jada rehash what went wrong and play footsie with the idea of giving it another try. The play stars Kara Young, Biko Eisen-Martin, and Michael Rishawn under the direction of Zhailon Levingston at MCC Theater in New York City. Inspired by “luscious portrayals of Black love…from the 1990’s and 2000s,” Table 17 aims to serve up Black Love on stage. Watch our video essay review to find out if we’re sending it back to the kitchen or sending our compliments to the chef!
