When I heard the news this summer that Maya Boyd had been cast as Storm in the new XMen movie from Marvel my first thought was “OH, SHE’LL BE FANTASTIC” followed closely by “WAIT, I MET HER!” and then “I HAVE FOOTAGE!”

In March, I had the opportunity to interview Maya Boyd on behalf of Black Girls Do Theater ahead of her role as Molly Cunningham for the Debbie Allen-directed Broadway production of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. In celebration of her recent casting announcement, I thought I’d share this interview with anyone who’s Maya-curious. What’s stayed with me since this interview and still stands out as I watch it back months later is Maya’s poise, warmth, and thoughtfulness — everything I’d expect from Storm (the most powerful woman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and a triple threat movie star in the making!
